The Sacramento Kings franchise has been tosses around from city to city like an annoying army brat. Its journey began in 1945 when the Rochester Royals were created as a member of the National Basketball League. In 1948, it moved to the Basketball Association of America. In 1956, the team moved to Cincinnati and in 1972, the team moved to Kansas City and renamed themselves the Kings. The Kings moved west to their current home of Sacramento in 1985. Unfortunately, all the moving around stunted the Kings growth. The team's only claim to victory was in 1951, the one time it won a NBA title. The team did see a shimmer of hope between 1985 and 1995 when they made the playoffs once. Other than that, the team's bad luck and poor decision-making has caused the fans and players of the Sacramento Kings much heartache. A car crash practically ended the career of a promising young Kings point guard, Bobby Hurley. Slowly, the Kings management is trying to strengthen the team by drafting some top-notch players including Jason Williams, Vlade Divac, Peja Stojakovic and the trade of Mitch Richmond for Chris Webber. Many of these acquisitions are attributed to general manager Geoff Petrie who has won NBA Executive of the Year several times.
One great player and Hall of Famer to play on the Sacramento Kings was Nate "Tiny" Archibald. At 6'1, this man dominated the position of point guard in the NBA by using his breathtaking quickness. A shy, diminutive man off the court, Archibald became a fearless predator among the forest of giants on the court. He penetrated the field by excelling at passing and outside shooting. His quickness made him impossible to guard. As a second round pick in the 1970 NBA draft, head coach of the Cincinnati Royals, Bob Cousy, saw Archibald's potential and decided to take a chance on him. Cousy plucked him out of the University of Texas-El Paso hoping that the rookie could take the heat of the NBA. Adding to Archibald's toughness was his formative years playing on the tough courts and playgrounds of New York City. Though he was vertically challenged, Archibald could handle the pressures of the NBA plus give it back. His most accomplished feat may his claim as the only NBA player to lead the league in scoring (34.0) and assists (11.4)
